Game UI Design: Creating Interfaces Players Love
A game’s interface is the bridge between the player and the experience. Menus, heads-up displays, inventory screens and notifications all shape how players feel. Great game UI keeps them immersed, while poor UI pulls them out of the world.
Game UI has unique challenges. It must be readable during fast action, match the game’s art style and work across screens, from phones to large monitors and TVs, often with controllers as well as touch or mouse.
The role of UI in games
Clarity always comes first. Players should understand health, resources and objectives at a glance. Visual style comes next, using colour, typography and iconography that fit the game’s world and tone.
Key elements of game UI
HUD: On-screen information that is clear in the heat of play without cluttering the view.
Menus and inventory: Navigation that is fast, intuitive and consistent across every screen.
Style and feedback: Visual and audio feedback that rewards actions and fits the game’s world.
Our approach to game UI design
We start with player flows and wireframes, then develop a visual style, icon set and component library. We prototype key screens, test readability at real sizes and prepare assets and specifications for the development team.
Minte Space designs game interfaces, icons, logos and promotional art for studios and indie developers. If your game needs a UI that players remember for the right reasons, we would love to help.
