Slow Websites Lose Sales: How Page Speed Affects Your Business

Nobody waits for a slow website. Visitors hit the back button and choose a competitor whose page loaded first. Speed also affects where you appear on Google, because Core Web Vitals are part of its ranking signals. If your site feels sluggish, it is costing you customers every day.

How slow is too slow?

Google’s research on mobile pages found that the probability of a visitor leaving rises sharply as load time grows from one to five seconds. As a rule of thumb, aim for your main content to appear in under 2.5 seconds on a mid-range phone.

Measure it properly

Run your key pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and check the three Core Web Vitals:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content appears. Target under 2.5 seconds.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Target under 200 milliseconds.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps around while loading. Target under 0.1.

The usual culprits

Oversized images. A 5 MB photo shown at 600 pixels wide wastes bandwidth. Resize images and use WebP or AVIF formats.

Too many plugins and scripts. Every slider, chat widget, tracker and font adds weight. Remove what you do not use.

A slow server. If the server responds slowly, everything that follows is delayed.

Page builders without optimisation. Visual builders are convenient but can output heavy code if every effect is switched on.

Quick wins

Enable caching and a CDN. Compress and lazy-load images below the fold. Load fonts efficiently and limit how many font weights you use. Delay non-essential scripts such as chat widgets until after the page has loaded.

Design for speed from the start

The fastest fix is a design that does not need fixing. When we design a site, we plan image sizes, animations and third-party tools around a performance budget, so the finished site looks rich without feeling heavy.
